Postage rates to change
New Zealand Post will simplify the sending of mail overseas from October 2. As a result some items will be more expensive to post, while others will drop in price. A postcard sent by surface mail will cost 50c, a reduction on the two rates of 60c and 70c. Enveloped mail sent by surface mail will drop in price with large items costing $l.lO compared with $2.15 now. A N.Z. Post spokesman, Mr Mike Madigan, said small packets sent by surface would increase in cost by up to 65c. All aerogrammes and postcards sent
by airmail would cost $l. The cost now ranges from 70c to $1.30 depending on destination. Enveloped mail sent airmail would be cheaper from October. However, small packets would be significantly more expensive. The price increases were to cover increased costs such as GST, Mr Madigan said. Increases for the average inland parcel would be about 2 to 3 per cent. Weight-based pricing for small inland Fastpost parcels up to one kilogram would be eliminated and one nationwide rate would be charged, he said.
