Goals funding deterred by politics

Trust Bank Canterbury has held off introducing a new account aimed at providing funds for the Going for Goals programme partly because of the programme’s increasing political sensitivity. The bank’s general manager, Mr Richard Bray, confirmed yesterday
that “an embryo” of a television advertisement launching the scheme had been produced but would not yet be shown. The bank had backed the Going for Goals programme with sponsorship of $30,000 for the Goals Forum on Queen’s Birthday week-end. Since then several ideas had been
floated for ongoing support. “But at the moment we believe the timing is not right, for a number of reasons,” Mr Bray said. One reason is the perceived politicisation. of the Going for Goals programme, with several key members standing as candidates in the local body elections.
