Daughter tortured
NZPA-Reuter Peking A Chinese couple tortured their five-year-old daughter, even dragging her through a field behind a tractor, because a fortune teller said she would bring bad luck to their son, an official newspaper said yesterday. Highlighting the plight of baby girls who are often abandoned or maltreated because Chinese traditionally prefer sons, the “China Daily” said the couple gave their daughter at birth to the fortune teller and repossessed her five years later.
A court in the eastern province of Jiangsu, one of China’s wealthier areas, ordered the couple to make a public selfcriticism after they promised not to torture their daughter again.
