Lawyer appeals tribunal ruling

PA Wellington A Wellington lawyer, Dan Riddiford, has appealed against eight counts of professional misconduct or negligence and his removal from the law register. Mr Riddiford’s counsel, Mr Bruce Squire, said yesterday the appeal was lodged at the High Court in Wellington soon after the New Zealand Law Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal found him guilty last month. Mr Squire said he hoped the appeal would be heard before the end of this year. Most of the 16 charges

related to Mr Riddiford’s work in 1986, when he was a partner in the Newtown law firm Vasan Riddiford. The tribunal said Mr Riddiford had allowed a real estate agent to use the name of a fictitious Featherston farmer in property deals. He had also become involved in a conflict of interest in arranging a mortgage for two other clients. Mr Riddiford was debarred from practising as a barrister and solicitor and was ordered to pay costs of $13,605 to the tribunal and Wellington Law Society.
