Protection for historic places
By
PETER LUKE
The Government will legislate this year to prevent developers destroying historic places for which protection orders have been applied. The Minister of Conservation, Mr Woollaston, said that under the new legislation as soon as protection procedures were started, an interim protection period would also begin. It would probably last six months. “The disasters of the past... will not be repeated under the new system of heritage protection,” said Mr Woolaston in an address in Auckland. ■ The new legislation would also answer long-standing Maori concerns by giving greater protection to traditional Maori sites. The criteria would be in terms of the historical, spiritual, cultural or emotional value to the people of the land, he said.
