Trip yields a surprise find
The scavenging trip of four youths at the Styx River this week led a surprise find. The holiday activity of Nick Jones, Matthew Faass and Simon King, all of Christchurch, and Grant McDonald, of Hawke’s Bay, had turned up items including engine parts, radios and magazines. This time their quest led them to a tombstone. “We saw a rope and decided to follow it and it led to the headstone,” Nick said.
The headstone, in the shape of a cross, had a square base and was inscribed with the words “In Loving Memory Of.” Its weight required an extra pair of hands (Nick’s father, Mr John Jones) and a vehicle to remove it from the riverbed. The youths were told by a funeral director that the unused headstone was valued between $l5OO and $2OOO. A police spokesman said if it was not claimed within two weeks, they could keep it.
