A.C.C. rise hits vehicles
By
NEIL CLARKSON
The cost of registering most vehicles will rise next month, fuelled by an increase in Accident Compensation Corporation levies.
The cost of registering cars, buses, goods vehicles, motor-cycles above 60 cu cm,, selfpropelled caravans, mobile cranes and service coaches will rise about $16.31 from October 1. Car registration will rise from $165.63 to $181.94. The corporation levy on these vehicles will rise from $lOO to $114.50, excluding GST. The levy on vintage cars, veteran cars, motorcycles under 60 cu cm, power-cycles and roadgoing tractors will increase from $30.30 to $40.45, excluding GST. Owners can expect to pay $11.41 more. The cost of registering smallcapacity motor-cycles will rise from $60.21 to about $71.62. There will be no change to the registration costs of trailers, caravans, ambulances, fire engines and hearses. These do not attract an A.C.C. levy. The corporation’s managing director, Mr Jeff Chapman, said the increasing cost of road accidents forced the rise in levies.
Mr Chapman said the corporation considered reserves equal to four months of expenditure were necessary in its motor vehicle account.
