Trackwork Rivals turn on speed
PA Hastings Ton of Luck and Mighty Glenn, which are likely to clash at Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay meeting, turned on the speed in training at Hastings yesterday. The Pukekohe visitor Mighty Glenn ran a solo 800 m and finished full of running, while Ton of Luck worked strongly over the same distance with Justaire.
Mighty Glenn and Ton of Luck are being aimed at the $lO,OOO 1400 m race for horses with 0 to 5 wins and both should acquit themselves well. Fast work was on the plough and wide out on the No 1 grass. Both tracks were firm.
Mighty Glenn had cotrainer Denis Cole aboard when scampering over 800 m on the plough in 48.25, the last 600 m in 36.
He is one of four horses from the Cole and Lowther stable which campaigned at last week’s Wanganui meeting and have come on to Hawke’s Bay. The others are Stylish Lass, Cossobury King and Ragged Edge.
Bob Lowther brought Mighty Glenn and Stylish Lass to last year’s Hawke’s Bay spring meeting and won a race with the former. Ton of Luck and Justaire ran out 800 m on the plough in 49.7, the last 700 m in 36.2.
Trainer Tony Lyndon has built Ton Of Luck up steadily over the last few months and should have her ready for a good effort fresh up on Saturday. Polaris and the stablemates, Sunshine Lad and Embargo, were others to record fast times.
Polaris had a big weight up yet still managed to run (a solo 800 m on the plough in 48.3, the last 600 m in 36. He was an impressive trials winner at Foxton and looks capable of clearing maiden ranks quickly. Trainer Norval Temperton is hoping to get a start with the Famous Star three-year-old at the coming Hawke’s Bay meeting.
Sunshine Lad and Embargo took just 48.7 to run their 800 m on the plough,
the last 600 m in 35.9. Sunshine Lad was prevented from starting at last week’s Poverty Bay meeting because his brands were unrecognisable. This has since been clarified and his trainer, Tony Burridge, also hopes to get a run at Hawke’s Bay with the big chestnut.
Embargo ran home strongly for fourth over 1600 m at Gisborne last week and is now booked to fly to Hong Kong later this month to race at the newly established Macau centre.
Seagers was travelling easily at the end bf 1000 m in 1:6.1, the last 600 m in 39.1. He has been freshened and will run in the 0 to 2 wins 1400 m race at Hastings. Fiesta Rose (Auckland) and Bokora ran an easy 800 m on the plough in 57.8, the last 600 m in 42.5. Fiesta Rose ran two good races at last week’s Poverty Bay meeting and is another which should not be long in clearing maiden ranks.
