Profit reports boost Aust. market

aae Sydney Australia’s sharemarket closed sharply higher yesterday boosted by expectations of strong profit results from leading companies this week and solid demand from overseas investors. The all-ordinaries index was 14.0 points up at 1778.0 near the close, only marginally off its peak at 1779.4. “All the results we’ve had so far have been quite positive and they are adding momentum to the market," one broker said. National turnover was 128.5 million shares, worth 5A289.6M, with rises outnumbering falls about 11 to 9. Resources giant, CRA, jumped 20c to 1185 ahead of its better than expected sAust3ll.9M interim net results, announced after the close of trading.
