Kiwi tries immortalised
PA London Kiwi stars James Leuluai, Gary Campbell, Mark Elia and kevin Iro have had their deeds immortalised among the 101 rugby league tries rated the best seen on British television. A new BBC video features six tries scored by the New Zealanders. The veteran Leuluai, now with Wakefield, is very much the star of the show.
He figures three times with tries for Hull against Bradford in 1981, against Castleford in 1983 and in the Challenge Cup final against Wigan in 1985. Campbell is included for a brilliant effort scored for Hull against Castleford in 1982. Unfortunately he also features for a moment he would rather forget — throwing the pass intercepted by
Stuart Wright for an 85yarder for Widnes in the 1982 Challenge Cup final. Elia and Iro both get into the act on the strength of Wembley tries — Elia for St Helens against Halifax in 1987 and Iro for Wigan against the same opposition the following year. Graeme West, the former Kiwi captain and now Wigan assistant coach, also gets into the show, not for a try he scored but for one he set up for Wigan with a stunning 50yard break in the Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR in 1985.
The BBC plans to make the video available in New Zealand later in the year. The Wigan prop, Adrian Shelford, is the sole New Zealander included in a select side chosen in a poll of
English first division coaches based on last season’s form. The test frontrower, currently sidelined with a calf injury, was favoured by six out of the 12 coaches canvassed. Others who won votes but were not included in the select side were Kevin Iro (four votes), Emosi Koloto (two) and Tony Iro and Kurt Sorensen (one each). The full team is: Alan Tait (Widnes), Des Drummond (Warrington), Andy Currier (Widnes), Joe Lydon (Wigan), Martin Offiah (Widnes), Shaun Edwards (Wigan), Andy Gregory, (Wigan), Kevin Ward (Castleford), Phil McKenzie (Widnes), Adrian Shelford (Wigan), Mike Gregory (Warrington), Andy Platt (Wigan), Ellery Hanley (Wigan).
