Americans name strong Dunhill Cup golf team

NZPA-AFPST ANDREWS, Scotland The United States has underlined its determination to regain the title as golf’s superpower with the announcement of its strongest-ever team for the Dunhill Cup. The leading American money-winner, Tom Kite, joins the British Open champion, Mark Calcavecchia and the United States Open champion, Curtis Strange, for the 5U51.3 million (SNZ2.2 million) tournament from September 28 to October 1. New Zealand will be represented by Frank Nobilo, Simon Owen and Grant Waite. So far the Americans’ best Dunhill Cup showing was four years ago, when they lost, 3-0, to Australia in the final.

This year the format for the final will be different for the first time, with the match being played over 36 holes, instead of 18, and captains able to change their lineups after the first round. “The International Ad-

visory Committee feel that a six-match final will provide more golf and produce an enthralling last day,” said a tournament spokesman. In the event of a tie, the result will be decided by sudden death, with each team nominating one player to represent it. The' tournament gets under way with the preliminary round on September 26, when Zimbabwe, Italy, Colombia and South Korea compete for a place in the 16-nation lineup for the first round two days later.
