All New Zealand surveyed ships will have to carry Emergency Position-Indicat-ing Radio Beacons (E.P.1.R.8.) from January 1990.
Foreign boats fishing within the New Zealand exclusive economic zone will be required to carry a beacon. Pleasure boats and fishing vessels outside the zone but inside the New Zealand search and rescue area, have also been asked to equip their boats with beacons.
The beacons, which transmit signals detectable by aircraft, have proven successful in saving lives and cutting search and rescue time.
