Art gallery
Sir, —The fine old Government Departmental building in Cathedral Square is worth considering for i restoration; but, please, please,’ not to be an art gallery. That would be a disaster for Christchurch. An art gallery is not simply a collection of fourwalled rooms in which to hang paintings. To be considered for hosting world-famous art collections we must be able to offer a secure “home” for them which meets the. many complex, sophisticated requirements of a modem museum of art. Wellington is the parliamentary capital of New Zealand; Auckland is the com-mercial-financial-industrial capital; Dunedin Jis the “social wellbeing capital. The only capital status slot, left for Christchurch is that of cultural capital, and it is up for grabs now. The vacancy will not last. Christchurch needs a new museum of art now, and it will not need another for approximately 100 years. We cannot afford to miss out on the chance of the century. — Yours, etc.,
J. K. MOIR. August 31, 1989.
