Tourism
Sir, —Many will agree with the criticism of Mr Hideji Kitao (August 19) that tourists find relatively littje to do in Christchurch at week-ends. Those who host such tourists at week-ends could well be reminded that Akaroa, surely one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand, is little more than an hour away. Akaroa’s special charm is enriched by its picturesque harbour setting and unique history as New Zealand’s only French settlement. With visits from bach owners, holidaymakers, and daytrippers from all over New Zealand and overseas, Akaroa is no “dead town” at the week-end. Our research indicates that Japanese tourists, in particular, find more appeal in Akaroa than in Rotorua. — Yours, etc.,
WARREN BARNES. August 21m 1989.
