Airport transport

Sir,—ln criticising the Supershuttle service, Mr C. E. McNicholl (August 30) demonstrates tunnel vision in relation to the passenger transport industry. The taxi and bus services in New Zealand are currently under the microscope on a number of issues. One newspaper made reference to several of these in a lead article headlined "Drastic cuts in buses feared,” on June 16, 1989. Yet here is an attempt to stifle a genuine alternative service which has already been shown to be needed by public demand. There is nothing unusual about a “per passenger” charging scheme. Worldwide, shared public transport services operate according to this system. Neither Should there be any stigma associated with providing the public with what it wants.

Successful businesses have always followed this practice. Let the, people of Christchurch decide what they want, and let the taxi and bus industry show that they are not afraid of competition.—Yours, etc., ANTHONY McANULTY, managing director, Supershuttle.
