National Radio gets new look

National Radio takes on a new look on Monday when Maggie Barry moves to the nine to noon slot and Wayne Mowat takes over the afternoons. “Maggie Barry: People, Events, Opinions and Music,” from nine to noon, will be an information programme, with plenty of talk, but also a good deal of music, says National Radio manager Errol Pike. “It won’t just be an extension of 'Good Morning New Zealand.’ We’d like it to be more of a forum of opinion, even controversy,” he says. “We want to give real people a chance to take part, think about issues and perhaps take a stand.” The programme aims to reach those who are looking for a wider look at the issues of the day. Barry says she will be looking for a fresh perspective on current news events. A central philosophy will be to involve more people of the sort who would not be asked for comment on the six-to-nine slot.

“We’ll be talking to ordinary people, the people who are affected by what’s happening in the news.”

There will be some op-

portunities for people to phone in to the programme and a write-in segment once a week. With “Wayne Mowat: In Touch With New Zealand” listeners will for the first time have a regular host every afternoon. The programme will aim both to entertain and inform. It will feature a wide range of music, including New Zealand music and new releases. Segments of the programme will be familiar to regular listeners to Mowat’s morning show. He will continue features such as gardening, a wine file, cooking and a weekly sports programme.
