Relaxed approach

Maggie Barry says she is looking forward to a more relaxed approach in her new morning programme on National Radio’s nine-to-noon slot. “In a tight news programme I have been confined by the day’s news and shorter interviews of the ‘Good Morning New Zealand’ format,” she says. “The challenge now will be to find the right niche and the right style which will work for me and which will please the later programme’s audience.” Barry has fronted “Good Morning New Zealand” since 1986 and has been with Radio New Zealand for nine years, working in Wellington, Masterton, Taupo and Palmerston North. As well as dealing with current issues on her new programme, she’ll be inviting guest experts in to talk about a range of leisure time activities. One area she’s keen to follow up is gardening. “I’ll be inviting a variety of gardening specialists to talk about speciality areas such as developiong perennials or gardening in a windy climate.” Barry is interested in horticulture and has had five years’ experience running a gardening business. Barry’s other interests are taking up golf, which she says is a “humbling experience," walking her dog, jazzercise and playing badminton. She says a long-term goal is to learn more about photography.
