New home for native birds

PA Auckland Tiritiri Matangi Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, will soon be home to 40 whiteheads or popokatea. Twenty of the native warblers will be released on Sunday after being transferred from Little Barrier Island. The district conservation officer, Mr lan Hogarth, said the bird was not a threatened species but lived in limited areas. The Conservation Department wanted to establish new colonies which were accessible to the public.

The noisy, inquisitive bird lives only on Little Barrier, Great Barrier, Arid and Kapiti islands, and in a small area of the centra] North Island. Its white head and body and brown wings make it a familiar sight to forest trampers. D.O.C. staff will erect mist nets to catch the insect-eating birds after attracting them with recorded calls. The net, invisible to the birds, envelops them without damage. They will be taken to Tiritiri by helicopter.
