Life support
Sir, —I refer to comments made by the Opposition spokesperson on social welfare, Mr Venn Young (August 25) that “matters related to life support for individual hospital patients should be based solely on medical decisions.” It would appear that Mr Young would retard progress on the issue of informed consent and further empower doctors to play at God to prolong life, thereby denying individuals the right to make decisions concerning their own health and quality of life. Do not take us back into the Dark Ages, Mr Young. Consumers of health services should be encouraged to take responsibility for their own wellbeing. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) LYNETTE C. LINTOTT. August 25, 1989.
