Licensing of dogs
Sir,—Regarding the article and associated comments by Mr Geoff Mehrtens, veterinary surgeon (August 18), on behalf of Christchurch Canine Action group I wish to stress that our petition which is now circulating throughout Christchurch has six clauses, of which the sought-after licensing of dog owners is only one. These clauses need to be studied as a whole to realise their merits and logic. The aims of the petition have their roots in years of observation and practi-
cal experience gained in the “pits” of the existing dog-control system. In seeking to bring mercy, and justice to the defenceless victims involved, we are also presenting a humane alternative which would also benefit local bodies and society at large as well as promote better attitudes and understanding between man and these remarkable, intelligent animals — Yours, etc., ESTELLE WIN.
