Fahey to also stand for council
By
KAY FORRESTER
The United Citizens mayoral candidate, Dr Morgan Fahey, will keep his place in the Citizens team contesting council places. Dr Fahey will stand for the Spreydon ward. He breaks the tradition of his United Citizens’ mayoral predecessor, Sir Hamish Hay, who stood only for the mayoralty, not the council for the last five elections. Dr Fahey’s principal mayoral rivals, Mrs Margaret Murray and Ms Vicki Buck, are standing only for the mayoralty. Dr Fahey, who has been a south ward councillor for the last three council terms, said he was still committed to the voters of Spreydon. His name had been put forward for Spreydon before the question of the mayoralty arose.
“I have had a lot of support from Spreydon and I want to continue to help the people there. If I’m not elected mayor I could still represent them as a councillor,” he said. Dr Fahey said some people would say he was having a “bob each way” standing for the council as well as the mayoralty. “Let them say that. I made a commitment to the people of Spreydon and I intend to keep it.” If elected to both positions Dr Fahey would withdraw as a councillor.
