Call to deport offender
PA Wellington A Tongan man whose behaviour was described by a judge as “like a mindless animal” should be deported to his home country and never allowed to return, the Opposition police spokesman, Mr John Banks, said yesterday. Mr Banks was commenting on a news report detailing the case of Rick Tafua, aged 22, of Auckland, who was sentenced on Tuesday to four years jail for assaulting a man last year. Tafua had been found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after assaulting the man last November. Mr Justice Hillyer told the High Court in Auckland that photographs of the victim’s face after the battering were “quite appalling.”
