Education body a law to itself —M.P.
One of the new Government education agencies, the Education Review Office, will be a law unto itself, National’s education spokesman, Dr Lockwood Smith says. He said Education Department officials had told the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education that there were no proposals to establish the role and functions of the Education Review Office in legislation. “The E.R.O. was established by State Sector Order on May 22. It will have enormous power, the
power to decide whether or not a school is performing satisfactorily against its charter, yet it won’t be established in legislation nor will its role and functions be defined in legislation,” Dr Smith said. “The legislation for ‘Tomorrow’s Schools’ is becoming a shambles. Most groups making submissions believe that the Education Review Office will be established in subsequent legislation. They, will be horrified to learn that the E.R.O. will function according to a corporate plan.”
