TENNIS Te Kura took the honours from Avonhead in the third round of the Fright Aubrey premier men’s inter-club doubles competition at the Indoor Tennis centre on Sunday evening. Te Kura won the encounter by one game, 38-37, with some fine form from Andrew Batle, Hugh Robinson, Mike Purcell and John Honeywell. Purcell won the player of the evening award in tribute to his “punishing forehands,” according to Vernon Aubrey, the instigator of the competition. Avonhead’s top pairing of Vernon Aubrey and Alistair Hunt took early blood from Robinson and Batie, 7-6, 6-2, and were in equally devastating form to account for Robinson and Honeywell, 6-4, 6-1. But the lower Avonhead order could not stay afloat for long enough to gather some valuable games. Shirley was chased closely by a courageous Cashmere line-up and survived by one set. Shirley was without Peter Hampton, which would have made a difference, but his absence heightened Cashmere’s resolve. Edgeware gained its first win against Elmwood. Brendon Furness was on loan from Fendalton, and combined with Scott Perkins to decisively take early rubbers. But the youngsters of the side were also in the limelight as Chris Small and Andrew Worley beat Richard Dalman and James Smith, 6-4, 6-3.
