Detention for assault

A man who assaulted a woman, aged 16, when she was four months pregnant, was sentenced to four months periodic detention by Judge Frampton in the District Court yesterday. Murray Michael Salesa, aged 22, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting the woman at 8 a.m. on August 4.

He was represented by Mrs Margaret Sewell. Sergeant Richard McCaskill, who prosecuted, said Salesa was in bed with the complainant. She wished to get out of bed but he attempted to stop her. He punched her face, then dragged her out of the bed and kicked her, including a blow to her

stomach. Relatives intervened to stop the attack. The complainant, who was four months pregnant, sought medical attention, and suffered swelling and bruising of her face.

Salesa told the police the woman had hit him first and he then hit her.
