Zilzal ‘high class’

NZPA-Reuter Goodwood, England Zilzal proved himself the best miler in Britain with a course recordbreaking success in the Group One Sussex Stakes last Wednesday. Ridden by Walter Swinburn, the 5-2 chance demolished a high class, eight-strong field, which included Europe’s top miler of 1988, Warning. Zilzal took command 400 metres from home and ran out a comfortable three lengths winner from 100-1 outsider, Green Line Express, ridden by Tony Cruz. Markofdistinction (3-1), ridden by Ray Cochrane, was a length and a half away third. Warning, the 7-4 favourite, did not enjoy the, best of runs in the straight and trailed in sixth.

Another disappointment was the Irish Two Thousand Guineas winner, Shaadi, trained like Zilzal by Michael Stoute. The colt was seventh with jockey Steve Cauthen reporting the ground too firm. Zilzal broke the course record set six years ago by just under a second. Stoute said: “That was a very high class performance from an inexperienced horse with only three races under his belt. He deserves a little rest and will then be prepared for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot at the end of September.” Zilzal races in the colours of Mana Al Maktoum, a cousin of Sheikh Mohammed, owner of Shaadi.
