Forestry sale conditions queried

Wellington reporter

Aspects of the agreement reached between the Crown and Maori interests on the sale of State forestry land have been questioned by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.

Mrs Helen Hughes said the public needed to know who would administer forest land and enforce the conditions of sale agreements entered into by the Crown. She has also called for

a requirement to be imposed so that land is replanted or restored once trees have been cut under any agreement. Soil erosion could occur without some attention being paid to the land after timber was cut, said Mrs Hughes. "New Zealanders who invested through taxes in the forestry resource have a right to insist that on the termination of cutting rights the land is left in as good or better condition than it is now,” she said.
