Portrayal of race relations attacked
PA Wellington The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday he was sick of foreign journalists coming to New Zealand for a few days and then producing their “end of the world” accounts of race relations here.
His comments were in response to a British Channel 4 documentary, “Sins of our Fathers," which was shown on Television New Zealand’s “Foreign Correspondent” programme on Thursday evening. Mr Lange said the programme did not portray "the true picture of race relations in this country as I know it."
He repeated that private land was not under threat from the Waitangi Tribunal.
“I am sick of overseas journalists whipping into New Zealand for a few days and then producing an ’end of the world’ account on this country’s race relations.
“The Government has no illusions about the difficulty of race relations issues here.
"We are equally convinced that these issues are not insoluble.
“They are being resolved, not by people shouting at each other, but by consultation between people of good will who want to work them through."
