Government apathy towards a fourth Tiwai Point aluminium smelter potline, which would boost Southland’s and New Zealand’s economy is puzzling, says the Opposition member of Parliament for Otago, Mr Warren Cooper?' He called yesterday for an end to “pussyfooting” by the Government and the immediate establishment of a task force to clear obstacles to the potline.
Mr Cooper, who is also National’s spokesman on Overseas Trade, praised Comalco, owner of the smelter.
He said it had proposed becoming part-owner of the Manapouri power scheme and had already shown its skills in environmental enhancement.
Aluminium sales, were a notable feature of New Zealand’s export receipts. “An effective and early signed agreement to build the fourth potline should not be allowed to dissipate through Government inaction,”- said Mr Cooper.
