Chch could get election ‘hot-line’

By

DAVID CLARKSON

Discussions next week will decide whether Christchurch will get an election “hot-line” for local-body voters who want more information. A Christchurch City councillor, Alex Clark, has been pressing for the telephone service to be set up for a week from August 4. He wrote yesterday to the chairman of the council’s policy and finance committee, Cr John Burn, who said last evening he intended to discuss the idea with council officials on Monday. “I see no reason why the council could not man a telephone facility to brief people who are concerned,” Cr Burn said.

“But I feel it may be that we should look at something that exposes the matter more widely than that.”

Cr Clark said he was concerned that the first electors would know of which city council ward, community board, regional council constituency or area health board ward they lived in was when their postal voting papers were delivered in October.

He suggests setting up the “hot-line” with existing City Council staff and by bringing in extra telephones and a special number.

Electors could ring in for information, and new voters could ask for enrolment forms to be sent out.
