Frenchman ahead
NZPA-Reuter Villar de Lans, France Laurent Fignon made his second , lightning strike in two days to win the eighteenth stage of the Tour de France yesterday and set himself on course for a third race victory. Frenchman Fignon, who took the race leader’s yellow jersey from Greg LeMond this week, increased his advantage over the American from 26 seconds to a potentially decisive 50 seconds thanks to a remarkable solo breakaway. "Something could still go wrong but it should be a lot easier now,” said a relaxed and cheerful Fignon. "It’s not so much but it’s a nice safety margin.” His lead is big enough to leave LeMond with little hope of beating him when the race concludes with a 24.5 k- individual time trial in Paris on Monday. y
