Barkley leading scorer
Noel Barkley, of Mount Wellington, scored twice in the latest round of the national soccer league to take the lead in the Golden Boot scorers’ competition.
The All White striker now has 13 goals from 13 games and is two goals ahead of the Christchurch United captain, Keith Braithwaite. Braithwaite has been troubled by a hamstring strain recently and has seen Barkley overtake him with seven goals in his last three
matches. Leading scorers are.—l 3: Barley; 11: Braithwaite; 7: Gary Faulds (Hutt Valley), David Laws (Waikato), Declan Edge (Mount Maunganui), Dave Witte veen (Mount Wellington), Gary Parker (Napier); 6: Greg Fleming (Wellington United), Tony Laus (Waitakere); 5: Mark Armstrong (Manurewa), Graeme Cameron (Waitakere), Allan Carville (Christchurch United). Meanwhile, Mount Maunganui’s unbeaten run of 13
games in the national league has pushed it to within sight of Christchurch United’s 22 match unbeaten streak set in 1987-88.
Mount Maunganui was unbeaten in its last six games last year, taking its undefeated run to 19 games. Its next four games are against Waitakere (away), Gisborne (home), North Shore (home), and Hutt Valley (away), a schedule which could give it a new record if it maintains its impressive form.
