Lure of gold helps Aust. market

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed above the critical 1600 level yesterday as a fall in the Australian dollar attracted overseas and domestic buying interest to the gold sector. Dealers said a strong performance by market leader, BHP, also helped to lift the market. The all-ordinaries index closed 6.6 points higher at 1603.0 and the gold marker was up 21.6 at 1566.3. “The new 1600 base was sustained and buyers proceeded to top-up their holdings,” said Jardine Fleming senior dealer, Mr Peter Morgan. The all-ordinaries was at its highest level since August 25 last year. The all-industrials index was 6.1 points higher at 2570.5 and the all resources rose 6.6 to 871.2. National turnover saw 109.7 million shares, worth sAust2so.7M, traded. Rises led falls three to two. Lend Lease and Howard Smith each gained 10c to 1140 and 475 respectively. Market leader, BHP, gained 8c to 9.56 on turnover of 3M shares, worth sAust2B.BM. Boral gained 7c to 358, Amcor 3c to 434, and Pacific Dunlop 1c to 477 on turnover of 2M shares. Among the entrepreneurs, Adsteam jumped 10c to 710, Bond Corporation 8c to 85c, and Brierley Investments 2c to 140. Elders IXL was unchanged at 300 on turnover of 5.6 M shares. Brokers said the main buyers of the stock were Nevitts, ANZ McCaughan, and Mclntosh Hamson Hoare Govett. Elders share price has risen He since Monday ahead of next Thursday’s shareholders meeting to approve Harlin Holdings Pty underwriting the Petito one-for-five rights issue. Bank issues were mostly weaker. National Australia fell 6c to 610, ANZ 4c to 506, and Westpac 2c to 510. In the resource sector, Triad Minerals jumped 10c to 195, CRA 8c to 936, and Renison Gold Fields 6c at 770. Among the gold miners, Whim Creek rose 15c to 320, North Flinders Mines 13c to 255, Metana 10c to 335, Placer Pacific 8c to 305, Dominion 7c to 167, and Paringa 6c to a month’s high at 82c.

On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the September share price index contract fell 6.0 points to 1632 from Thursday’s 1638 finish. About 844 lots were dealt.
