Fern Glen will be one of the favourites

Auckland correspondent Fern Glen’s dominating victory in the first Caduceus Club heat should confirm her as the one to beat in tonight’s $50,000 Final at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park. The Irvin Behrnstrained two-year-old has developed into a talented type and with a handy barrier draw of four tonight she will take some beating. Fern Glen will face stiff opposition though from the likes of other heat winner Helen Grosvenor, Jiffy’s Girl, Letterkenny Lady and Assisi. Helen Grosvenor led from start to finish for her heat win last Friday night and although she has drawn awkwardly on the second line she cannot be dismissed.

Jiffy’s Girl finished fast from the midfield for her second to Helen Grosvenor last week and she must rate a re&l chance if she secures a good trip. If she did succeed it will also cap off an outstanding season for her Pukekohe trainer, Peter Blanchard.

Letterkenny Lady impressed with her big effort for second to Fern Glen a fortnight ago in her debut. She stormed home from last for her placing and is another which has not fared well in the barrier draw. Assisi should be improved tonight after she had her first run for some time when she finished a battling fourth behind Helen Grosvenor last week.

Her Canterbury trainer, Paul Newton, says the filly will be a big danger from her No. 1 barrier draw and he is expecting her to go well.

The Dunedin filly,. Marsa Star, was a shade disappointing last Friday and could well be a better proposition as she looked a shade lame when only finishing sixth.

Tonight’s Caduceus Club Final has attracted a very even line-up of fillies and other chances including the ultra-consistent Interchange and Rotowaro, plus the American-bred The Exterminator.
