Star Board retired to stud
PA Wellington The former brilliant juvenile, Star Board, has been retired and will commence stud duties next breeding season. The Star Way entire, which is rising seven, will stand at Ashford Park Stud in Otaki, the breeding complex operated by his owner, a Wellington businessman, Arthur Williams.
Star Board was being prepared for a return to racing under the care of Otaki trainer, Jim Didham. However, the horse bruised a tendon while working last week and the decision was made to retire him rather than risk further injury. “It was bad luck because he was coming up extra well,” Ashford Park company secretary, John Rosevear, said. Star Board had given every indication that he was on his way back to form, having already won a trial after being off the scene for a couple of seasons.
It had been the intention for Star to
resume his racing career in the Reeves Handicap at Matamata last Saturday. After his two-year-old days, when he was rated the best juvenile of his year in the 1984-85 season with victories including the Group One Swettenham Stud Sires’ Produce Stakes at Awapuni, Star Board failed to find his best form in subsequent seasons.
Niggling injuries constantly plagued the horse although he was successful at three and four.
After his four-year-old racing in New Zealand Star Board was campaigned in the United States but again injuries and a virus prevented him from showing form in four starts.
Star Board, from the Regent’s Tale mare Lieder, won eight races and more than $155,000 in stakes. His stud fee has been set at $2500. Five stallions, including Star Board, will be in residence at Ashford Park next breeding season.
