Proposal rejected
A proposal by the Toowoomba Turf Club to introduce night racing has been turned down. State Racing Minister, Jim Randell, said that while the application appeared sound in principle, details of the proposal required further consideration. Mr Randell said he was fully supportive of the concept of night racing but requests for assistance from the Racing Development Fund were too numerous to grant the Toowoomba club moneys for the proposal.
“By and large, these statewide applications deal with requests to provide basic facilities relating to safety and racing operations at the various racecourses,” he said. Because of the number of applications for assistance on hand, Mr Randell said he must ensure that funds drawn were used to expand the industry as a whole. The $1 million sought by the Toowoomba proposal was a grant which at this stage could not be met by that criteria.
