Beechwood facing tough test today

Wellington correspondent Beechwood, faces a tough test when he races at Hawera this afternoon in the $12,000 DB Draught 1600, the main handicap at the Opunake Racing Club’s meeting because he has not raced since Queen’s Birthday week-end when he finished sixth at Awapuni. Before that he had won at Woodville and last May he finished second behind Mister Tee at Hawera. Beechwood has won four times. Only on five occasions, in 20 races has he been out of the money and he has already won at Hawera. His regular rider, Peter Ayres, has the ride today. „„ With Our High Noon out; Dad’s Gift and Hold The Flag appeal as Hie main threats. Dad’s Gift has been in fine form. His effort to finish third in the Wilkinson (1600 m on Trentham’s opening day was an excellent one. He was second at Hawera the time before Trentham, a winner at Hawera in May and like Beechwood has a fine record on the track.
