Trackwork
Timaru PA Timaru Race rivals Polacca and Seve, which seem set to dominate the Challenge Seeds Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday, worked impressively at the Phar Lap Raceway yesterday morning. Polacca, ready to race again after an easy time recovering from a punctured hoof, sprinted his opening 600 metres in 37 seconds, steadying toward the finish in 40.1 s on a firmish track set by a good frost. The rangey gelding has come back to his best after
two disappointing seasons and from the way he is working he could complete a hat-trick of wins on Saturday.. Seve, in contrast a lazy trackworker, completed 800 m in 52.55, the last 6QOm in 39.5 s alongside Ibeta. Seve deserves a winning turn. Lyn Melville, who trains Polacca, is working two promising types in Zelphi and Pass The Salt. Zelphi, a gelding by Zephyr Place, sprinted an impressive 600 m with Red Sovereign in 38.65. He makes his debut in the Charing Cross. Maiden and is no forlorn prospect. Pass The Salt went a good race at Timaru last start after getting bogged down at Riccarton. He worked with Red
Terne over 1000 m in 1:06.6. Count Claudio and Clarkin Road sprinted 600 m in 40.45. A Sir Bart filly and Colonial Boy ran 600 m in 37.45, quicker than the hurdler Charlie Trelay, which needed 40.15. Sergi, which could be an improver for the two year old race, dashed 600 m in 39.2 while Special Treat and Master Casey were travelling well after 800 m in 50.4 s the last 600 m in 38.45. Tyrone Gold and Balmoral Castle required 40.5 s for 600 m but Tune’s Image was keen to go quicker when running 51s and 39.4 s for her gallop.
