AUSTRALIA Sellers chip at gains

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed slightly firmer yesterday in spite of a bout of mild profit-taking in the afternoon session.

Market leader, BHP, reflected the market’s mood, up strongly at 948 c in the morning, but closing down 2c at 936.

“The market was very sleepy up to and after the release of the June balance of payments figures, but at no stage did it look weak,” said Ord Minnett senior dealer, Mr Mike Crowley.

The all-ordinaries index closed E 7 points higher at 1565.0. The all-industrials index was 4.9 points higher at 2524.8, but the all-resources slipped 0.5 to 840.5. The gold index gained 5.7 to 1507.6.

National turnover saw 107.2 million shares, worth sAustl6sM, change hands. Rises led falls about four to three.

Lend Lease jumped 15c to 1080 and ICI Australia and Burns Philp each gained 10c to 610 and 335 respectively. Elders IXL was up 3c at 295 on turnover of 3.5 M shares. Brokers said Ord Minnett was the main buyer of the stock.

News Corporation fell 15c to 1605 and Pacific Dunlop lost 2c to 463 after buying Repco Merchants for sAust27M. First International Property Trust jumped 14c to 99 as ANZ McCaughan sold 10M shares, or 10% of issued capital, at 99c a share to James Capel Australia. Slightly more than 10M March, 1991, options were also exchanged. Mr Rene Rivkin’s investment arm, Oilmet Investments, gained 2c to 29 as Rivkin’s crossed 5M shares at 30c a share. Entrepreneurial stocks were mostly firmer. Adsteam gained 8c to 682, Bond Corp 3c at 68c and Brierley Investments 2c at 135. Bank issues were mostly firmer. ANZ gained 5c to 500 and National Australia 2c at 608. Westpac was down 4c at 506. In the resource sector, Comalco lifted 9c to 365 and Queensland Metals Corporation gained 8c to 150. CRA lost 4c to 898 and Western Mining 2c to 560. Among the gold stocks, Poseidon lifted 5c to 225 and Barrack Mines 3c to 195.
