BURGLARIES Clothing valued at more than $15,000 was stolen from C. J. Smiths, Rangiora, overnight on July 16 to 17. Items included denim wear, jackets and dresses. On July 6 a house in Strickland Street was broken into. Property stolen included a National Quintrix colour television, Panasonic video recorder, black leather skirt, white leather skirt, three pairs of leather trousers, two watches, a rabbit fur jacket, a suitcase and an overnight bag. On July 2 a house on the main Akaroa highway was burgled. Property stolen included a Phillips microwave, Panasonic radio, Russell Hobbs kettle, Sunbeam toaster, dinner set and other kitchen appliances, 30 records, bottles of wine and rack, three men’s suits, Bernina sewing machine, jewellery, Phillips television set and Orion video. On July 7, the BP Westburn Service Station, Waimairi Road. Stolen, toolbox containing mechanic’s tools all engraved PA, Orchida electric drill and Aurora calculator. Between July 7 and 9, a house in Knowles Street. Stolen, two brass-base bedside lamps with frosted glass shades, bedding, jewellery including two gold chains and two Seiko watches, Sony stereo radio-cassette, National video, TEAC amplifier, clock radio, tape and video cassettes, Persian rug, Royal Doulton ornamental plates, ornaments, brass clock, National microwave,

leather topped wine table and Jardiniere planter. Between July 9 and 10 the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Husseys Road. Stolen, 15 Bowron sheepskin rugs (mostly white), five deerskin rugs, 10 bone carving necklaces and five hand-knitted jerseys in natural colours. The occupants of a Burlington Street house were robbed of a Sharp video recorder, Toshiba microwave and a 6inch black and white television set. The offenders are described as a male Maori, 183 cm tall, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, of 'solid build, with long black curly hair, moustache, wearing a red and white cardigan, white T-shirt and blue jeans. He was carrying a baseball bat; a male Maori, 174 cm tall, aged 20-22, of solid build, with short dark hair (tight curls), clean shaven, blue denim jacket and jeans; he was carrying a knife; and a male Caucasian, 165 cm tall, a skinhead, of medium build, aged in his 20s, with dots tattooed under an eye, wearing a light grey turtle-necked sweater and blue jeans. They were travelling in a 1967 Chrysler Valiant car. Several elderly women cyclists have been robbed of their purses and shopping bags. They were accosted by two young men, also riding bicycles.
