Asian migrants
Sir, —There is something rather pathetic about the way so many organisations are so pitifully anxious for Asian immigrants to arrive and rescue them from New Zealand’s low inflation, suppressed economic climate. Now even Christchurch’s leading schools are joining the clamour for immigrants. People do not need to worry about encouraging the Asians because they are only, too well aware that New Zealand is ripe with opportunity in its incredibly weakened state after five years of an incompetent Government which recklessly deregulated the New Zealand economy with no safeguards, so exposing the whole country to the worst chaos of any country after the sharemarket crash. Ridiculous over-emphasis on reducing inflation and stifling the economy meant New Zealand missed the world commodity boom nearly completely. No wonder New Zealand is desperate for Asian immigrants to revitalise things, but Asians are showing few signs of business investment here because the Labour Government is anti-busi-ness and has never understood business, which is evidenced by nearly 200,000 unemployed now.—Yours, etc., W. J. C. ROYDS. July 14, 1989.
