Six die in rest home fire
PA Auckland Five elderly men and one woman died and 11 others were injured when fire engulfed a rest home in Herne Bay, Auckland last evening. Two muffled explosions alerted neighbours to the tragic events which rapidly unfolded in the Sarsfield St home. They watched in horror as flames enveloped the wooden one-storey building, which was home to 20 people. Trapped residents in the Terwindle Convalescent and Rest Home cried for help - their calls mixed with the sound of exploding glass. Within minutes of the fire breaking out about 10 p.m., two bodies lay on the lawn and two more remained inside. A fifth victim was dragged outside by firemen, but efforts to resuscitate him failed. The sixth person died in hospital.
