Labour Party calls for nominees
PA Palmerston North The Labour Party is now seeking candidates for the first seven electorates ’for next year’s General Election, a party official said yesterday. Nominations will close . in all seven seats on August 11. Palmerston North, Wanganui and East Cape are I- going to nomination early > because the sitting members of Parliament will - retire next year. Also going to nomination are Sydenham, whose member of Parliament, Mr Jim Anderton, now leads the new Labour ■ Party, and Wairarapa, Timaru and Marlborough, which. Labour consider to be marginal seats. Labour holds majorities Of; 3237 in Palmerston North, 248 in Wanganui and 24 in East Cape. Mr Anderton held Sydenham for Labour by 6436 votes last election. National holds Wairarapa by 34 after a judicial recount It has * majorities of 857 in J.
