Delay on moving patients ‘victory’
PA Auckland The parents of 28 intellectually handicapped North Shore Hospital patients see a delay in plans to place the patients in the community as a big victory. The parents say they are still united and will not back down on their protest, said a spokeswoman, Ms Lesley Whitby. The Auckland Area Health Board proposal to move the patients into small community homes was totally unacceptable to parents. A spokesman, Mr lan Rumsey, said about 20 parents met on Sunday evening and were relieved the board agreed it was impossible to relocate the residents by September. The parents agreed to work with those in authority to make sure the group of patients stayed together and all possibilities were investigated. “We will have further meetings and discussions to find the right resolutions and are looking forward to working with hospital people,” Mr Rumsey said. The board’s general manager, Mr David King, said he did not know the details about North Shore but with his experience in similar situations in Exeter, England, he was aware how anxious families became.
