Events in China
Sir, —The “Guinness Book of Records,” which Ken Brougham quotes, is not an objective or reliable information source on alleged Communist killings, despite claims. Western “estimates” of people killed since China went Communist in 1949 vary from 26M to 64M — surely a ludicrous disparity. Sworn affidavits or eyewitness testimony are lacking: only vague references are offered for authenticity. China is still backward by our standards, but enormous progress still replaces 300 years of cruel foreign plunder. Ken Brougham’s claim that Taiwan is “free China” is laughable — with only one free election since the Nationalists under Chiang Kaishek, invaded and grabbed the island in 1949. Until 1972 Taiwan was massively armed and financially subsidised by America. Hence the “prosperity" Mr Brougham obviously admires — Yours, etc., M.T. MOORE. July 6,1989.
