Cystic fibrosis support

Cystic fibrosis is a particularly nasty disease affecting many children and some adults. As yet its cause is unknown and there is no cure. The body’s exocrine glands malfunction, producing a mucus which blocks the pancreatic ducts, the intestines and the lungs. The disease isn’t contagious and doesn’t affect intelligence — but it does affect physical and emotional development. It is life threatening. The Canterbury Cystic Fibrosis Association is one of ten branches throughout New Zealand involved in research and education. But their main purpose is to support local cystic, fibrosis sufferers and their families. To coincide with cystic fibrosis publicity week, the Christchurch association is holding a rock ’n’ roll evening this Friday, July 14. The Christchurch Rock ’n’ Roll Club will be demonstrating their skills during the evening, which will be at the R.S.A. hall in Main North Road, Papanui. Tickets are $l2 per person. Phone Julie Taylor at 599-426. Current affairs Those who feel their knowledge of current affairs needs a boost may be interested in a fourweek course starting on Monday, July 24. The subjects covered could be the Arab-Israeli conflict, the United States involvement in Central America, the relevance of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1989 and Vanuatu. These morning sessions will be held at St Andrew’s Anglican Church hall in Redcliffs, and led by Bishop Allan Pyatt. The fee is $8 or $2 per session. The course has been organised by the southeast branch of the Workers’ Educational Association. For bookings
