Search of crash site fruitless

PA Gisborne Mr Wayne Johnson went back to sea yesterday to find the place where he and the other survivors of Saturday evening’s helicopter crash lost the television cameraman, Mr Jo Von Dinklage, during their swimming ordeal. As the sound recordist joined divers in a boat to take them to where his friend and workmate disappeared, the family of Mr Von Dinklage continued a vigil on the shore. They said how grateful they were of everything people had done to help. The search ended its third day yesterday with no sign of the TVNZ cameraman, who apparently drowned as the “Holmes” Show team and a Gisborne pilot, Mr Tony Brice, swam from the helicopter and fought for their lives to reach shore. Family and locals have scoured the coastline at Anaura Bay, north of Tolaga Bay, each day. Locals have assisted with sea searches and a team of divers is working in difficult visibility. The family also keeps watch from two hilltop vantage points. Although it was dark when they crashed, Mr Johnson believed he was close to pinpointing the crash site and area where Mr Von Dinklage disappeared. From the boat he was able to identify the outline of the cliffs and beach.
