Waimairi to hold meeting on 1990
A public meeting to convene a Waimairi 1990 Committee will be held at the Bishopdale Community Centre this evening. It has been organised by the Waimairi District Council and will begin at 7.30 p.m.
The council’s community activities officer, Mr Rex Cosgrove, said the committee would be formed and officially registered to respond to any applications from community groups within the district seeking funding for special 1990 projects. It would be the committee’s task to approve applications and forward them to the 1990 Commission.
Mr Cosgrove said the Lottery Board had set aside money for 1990 projects on the basis of 50c a person. This meant Waimairi groups could benefit by up to $35,000.
This evening’s meeting will be chaired by the council’s chairman, Mrs Margaret Murray. A 1990 Commission project adviser in Christchurch, Ms Sharon Hunter, will address the gathering and advise on how an election for the committee should be conducted.
Mr Cosgrove said the committee would probably comprise about 12 people. Two Waimairi councillors, Crs David Buist and Barbara Stewart, had already offered to serve on it.
Although the meeting is open to anyone, more than 300 personal invitations have been sent to sports groups, youth groups, community organisations, churches and schools.
"Hopefully there will be a good representation of community ■ groups,” Mr Cosgrove said.
