Japanese favour N.Z.

By

LES BLOXHAM

Japanese tourists have given New Zealand the highest satisfaction rating in the world, according to a recent survey made by the Japan Government Tourist Bureau. More than 90 per cent said they were either “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their New Zealand experience. New Zealand was closely followed in the satisfaction stakes by Switzerland, Canada, and Austria. The two main features most Japanese liked about New Zealand were the “wonderful views” and “kind people.” New Zealanders were ranked tops for being “kind to travellers” — well ahead of Australians, Taiwanese and Canadians. New Zealand was also voted the safest country, followed by Australia,

Taiwan and Switzerland. However, Japanese who had not travelled placed New Zealand fourth as the place they would most like to visit — after Australia, Canada and Switzerland. The favourite activities of Japanese visitors to New Zealand were shopping, sightseeing and visiting art galleries, museums and restaurants. Their most sought after goods were chocolate and other confectionery, whisky, tobacco, clothes, accessories and perfumes. “The highest satisfaction with New Zealand shows that our special efforts to ascertain and cater for the requirements of Japanese tourists are working,” said Mr Alex Matheson, acting general manager of the New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department.
