Dog helps save house
PA Nelson A dog rescued from starvation and negligence five years ago repaid his owners in full last week-end. Sam, a labrador cross, raised the alarm at 2 a.m. on Sunday and his owners woke to find their garage and woodshed near the house ablaze. “When he barks at night there’s either somebody there or something not right in the neighbourhood,” the owner, Mrs Pauline Ching, said yesterday.
After Sam roused her she woke her four children and rang the fire brigade, which sent two engines and controlled the blaze before it could spread to the house. A car was burnt and a bicycle and more than $lOOO worth of camping gear were destroyed. Mrs Ching said the family collected Sam from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after publicity about his condition. He was a devoted pet, she said.
